How an extending dining table is checked before it ships
Closed, it is a round table. Opened on the factory floor, it shows its slides, its folding leaf and whether the veneer matches across the joint.

- A photo of an extending table closed shows almost nothing that matters.
- On the factory floor it is pulled open, the leaf unfolded and the joint checked.
- Four things are looked at: slide travel, leaf alignment, veneer match and the base under load.
- Each state is photographed so the buyer sees what the inspector saw.
An extending table is checked by opening it. The slides are run, the leaf is unfolded and dropped in, and the grain is compared across the joint. These photographs were taken on the factory floor during production of a fluted oak extending table.

What does “closed” hide?
Closed, the top reads as one surface on two fluted drum bases. You cannot see how the halves travel, where the leaf lives or how the leaf meets the fixed top. All of the engineering is underneath.
What is checked when it is opened?
The travel, first. The two halves are pulled apart on their slides. They should move together, without racking, and stop square. Then the folding leaf is lifted out and laid flat.

Then the joint. With the leaf in place, the three surfaces should sit level. A step you can feel with a fingertip is a step a plate will find. The grain and tone are compared across the joint, because a leaf cut from a different veneer batch shows immediately once it is next to the top.

Why photograph each state?
Because the buyer is not there. A set showing closed, opening, mechanism, joint and fully extended lets someone on another continent see what was checked. It is also the record the piece is compared against if a question comes up on arrival.
What this means for an overseas buyer
If a piece has a mechanism, ask to see it move before it ships. Extending tables, storage beds and recliners all belong in the group of things that cannot be approved from a photo. What must be specified for tables is listed under What We Source.
FAQ
Should the leaf be the same veneer batch as the top?
Ask for it in the specification. It is the simplest way to avoid a visible colour step.
Can the mechanism be checked by video?
Yes, and video is better than stills for travel. Stills are better for the joint.
Does the table ship assembled?
It depends on size and access at the destination. Tops and bases are often packed separately and numbered to one item code.
